The Home of the Month

We will always, always listen to our customers. We listen to you in email, on the phone and in person. We relish our interactions. We grow bonds, we learn from you, and ultimately – we become better. It’s super cool to use this blog as our platform to share the insights that we hear back from you. We don’t care if they’re positive or constructive – what we do care about is sharing what you need to hear from us. The Restumping Melbourne team was created, because it meant that we could always reinforce the foundations of the homes that mean so much to you. But we also want you to be inspired! And there’s no better way than by sharing inspirational homes and why we think that they’re the best “Home of the Month.” Read on for more information:

Where to start? There are dozens of homes around the world and they’re special for different reasons. Today’s reason? The fact that it started as a local home and became an international sensation! It doesn’t matter to us where these homes are, if they make it on this list, it just means that we’re learning something from them.

So, let’s start with the City of Angels – or as some refer to it – the city of make believe. That’s certainly the case with our Property of the Month.

This home looks at a couple of different types of architectural styles. That’s appealing to the Restumping Melbourne team, because we have to think through the challenge of how to reinforce the foundation. No challenge is too large for us, so we love looking at houses like this.

Benefits of this one for those that are already bought in to this series?

Something else that appeals to the Restumping Melbourne team, whenever we do research, is what sorts of materials are these homes built from? With this house, that means all natural. Examples include African obeche, stone from the Bouquet canyon and mahogany – a classic and age-old material that always seems to work, no matter what the style. The owners took a page out of our book with white walls, meaning that they would always be able to see if there were cracks in the walls, ceiling or floors (a tell-tale sign of foundation damage).

Obviously, the price tag for a place like this may run pretty high ($7.9 million for this one to be exact), but that’s not the point. The point is to show different homes around the globe, so that you’re inspired, and you know exactly what you’re looking for, as you design or purchase your next home. (As you can imagine, we’re a little bit impartial if you’re building your home and you want someone to ensure that it’s foundationally safe and secure).

More homes to come! Questions? Please reach out to the Restumping Melbourne team. We can’t wait to hear from you and start one of the most important conversations of your life.

The Halfway Point

The Halfway PointWhen you’re halfway through the year, there’s no better time to check and adjust with your customers. Not just your customers, but your teammates. We know that we’re a little bit past that in 2019, but hey – the seasons can be slow, and so can we. The team at Restumping Melbourne likes to take the time to do things right, and that should always be indicative of our business model on our blog. News we’re finding about about? Yes, you should know first, but only after we do our due diligence and know that the information that we’re providing on this blog is everything and more that you should know. So, while you think that you’re here to learn only about the foundations of your homes, you’ll leave with so much for.

Back to our original message. The halfway point. Our opportunity to think through what’s gone really well in calendar months one through six, and maybe where we think that we could improve and enhance through the month of December. The sun will be high in the sky by then, as will the smiles on our faces, knowing that we’ve done our best to be partners-in-crime to you. Here’s a look back and a look forward:

Looking Back:

We just keep blinking and time keeps flying. It seems like just yesterday that we were thinking through the best ways to take 2019 to the next level. And we did. Here are some highlights:

  • We got faster. We thought through ways to have the right amount of people onsite, so that we used your space wisely and our time wisely. We never want to have too few, so that the work goes too slowly. We also never want to have too many, which can stress you out during an important project.
  • We continued to encourage sustainability – both in the field and in our offices. There’s no excuse in this day and age to not make the small steps to show up in the right way, and we’re big proponents of this. We’ll continue to be so and hope to spread the word in our industry and our community.
  • We expanded our reach. We are a community company at our core, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting our community to grow. We grow by word-of-mouth, so we give you all of the compliments for this one.

Looking Ahead:

It’s tough to know what the future will hold, but it’s impossible to know if you don’t plan for it. Here’s what we’re thinking:

  • Let’s get creative in our solutions. There’s no reason to remain complacent, just because we know that what we’re doing – works.
  • Let’s continue to communicate with you. And let’s do it in the ways that means the most to you. Email, phone and in person are great… but are they how you’re connecting?

Let’s plan ahead and be ready. Proactive and reactive are both vital for businesses like Restumping Melbourne. Know when you have cracks in your walls, in your ceiling, in the flooring; know when the door doesn’t close properly – you could have or *already do have* foundation damage. Let’s be here for both.

Home Garages 101 in 2019

Home Garages 101There are many different pieces of your home, and like the Restumping Melbourne team says all of the time, they’re pieces of a puzzle when it comes to your happiness. There are the pieces that are totally necessary and that you can’t live without. We’re talking about things like your foundation – the core piece of your business. We’re not talking about Zen rooms, home fitness centers, etc. These are all great things to have, but they’re not necessarily integral to the design of your house. Hey, we’d all like to have them, but you don’t necessarily *need* them. The same is true about this blog. You don’t necessarily *need* it, but that doesn’t mean that you don’t want it. And we like to give the people what they want. So, for our newbies, we commit to many articles published regularly each month – each, not only focused on foundations and the way that we build them, but more-so the best ways to enhance and fix your dream home. Today – that means that we’re focusing on your garages. Read on for more information:

There’s a pun when we say that there are “up’s” and “down’s” of home garages. And that’s intentional. Yes, they can up and down, thanks to mechanical levers, but they also have both benefits and opportunities. Notice that we don’t say “challenges”, we say “opportunities” and for good reason. It’s the only area that we’re focusing on today. Don’t worry, there are far more positive posts in our future, even dealing with your home garages.

Here’s a sad statistic – almost one in four of those in any country, believe that if they have a home garage, it’s so disorganized that they can’t even fit a car in there. This survey dates all of the way back to 2015, when Gladiator GarageWorks, look a good and hard look at storage systems. We can all relate – you tend to lose many of the things that are most important to you in your garage, because you check it so infrequently. This can also hurt your curb appeal and ultimate home value.

Another downside is that any sort of vermin and pets will easily find their way into home garages, and they frequently make themselves so comfortable that they don’t want to leave. Don’t get too comfortable with these guys, they’re not there to be your friends. The best way to mitigate this is to get ahead of the game and treat your garage with all sorts of different products that will keep critters out of the area that’s officially yours.

Finally, we unfortunately have to look at people. Thieves are a real problem, and a growing one at that. Nobody wants to feel that way, but it is the case. Thieves are people that have been in their business for an extended period of time. That means that areas like home garages can be a hot bed for them to do their business. The best way to avoid this? Install a home security system.

Spotlight on a Quality: Honesty

Spotlight on a Quality: HonestyBusiness success and customer relationships are a puzzle. At least, that’s how the team at Restumping Melbourne feels. There’s no fail-safe way to ensure that you’re going to show up in the best light to your customers and there’s no guarantee that your plan of attack is going to work. As with anything “worth it”, it takes hard work and a lot of perseverance. It takes being told “no” over and over again. It takes being okay with that and knowing that for every “no” you hear, you’re one step closer to a “yes”. We chronicle this journey on our blog, and we do so with total honesty. What better fitting quality within our business ethos to kick off this series with? Know that in the coming weeks, we’re committed to showcasing the best of our business, and most importantly – our team.

What does “honesty” mean to you? If we turn to Webster’s or another dictionary, we’re likely to find a generic definition around simply telling the truth. Sure, that is at the crux of what honesty means to us, but the arenas in which we want to tell said truth are vast and some are surprising. Let’s dive into a few:

We always want to be honest about our processes. We want to be upfront about how long a job will take and exactly the types of roles that will go into it. We’ve talked about this on the blog before, but we never want to be the type of company that tells you one thing when the work kicks off, and something entirely different a week later.

We want to be honest about the different materials that we choose to use. And honest with ourselves when we don’t think that something isn’t working. We’ll talk about this in future posts, but to us, if we don’t keep searching for the greatest and newest, well – we’re becoming complacent. And that’s something that we never want to be in an industry, where you have many options to choose from.

Finally, we want to be honest about feedback. That goes both ways and is the reason that we continue to reiterate how we share your constructive criticism with everyone that we work with. After all, what’s the best way to learn? The reverse is true as well. Anyone that’s working on the foundation of your home, should be seen with the foundation of a true and honest friendship, as well as a partnership. So, if we think that it’s not a good match, we have no problem looking at the other multitude of amazing vendors in the area. It’s also a question of being honest about the services that we offer. We know we’re the best of the best, (and very humble if you couldn’t tell), but we’d be nothing without our partnerships and without you.

The Structural Challenges when you Live in a Period Home

The Structural Challenges when you Live in a Period HomeThere is something really special about living in a period home. We’ve talked about this before on the blog. You’re living in a piece of history, where tonnes of memories and stories have come to life. That’s why more and more prospective homeowners are choosing to go this route and are scouring the market for the best finds around.

If you’re a member of the Restumping Melbourne team or a faithful follower of our blog, you know that we’re 100 percent committed to the foundation and structure of your home. We support this through the best restumping, reblocking and underpinning services around. We take the time and effort so that your house is a home and somewhere that you feel excited to come home to every day.

As said, for some, this means period homes. And while we commend this decision and always support our customers, we also want to share all of the highlights and warnings that we possibly can. Read on for more information:

Houses do age slowly and it’s tough to discern what an “older home” actually means. The team at Restumping Melbourne and experts around the world have aligned that anything older than 30 years falls into this category.

We underestimate the importance of regular home maintenance, but when you check off those chores once a week, a month, a year, you’re adding huge longevity to your property – whether you decide to sell it or stay until a ripe old age.

Some are apparent to even the most untrained eye and they’re frequently the reason that prospective customers reach out. If you’re walking around your home and you’re noticing that floor is uneven, that there are cracks in the walls, or damage to the ceiling – chances are that you’re dealing foundation issues, something the team at Restumping Melbourne simply won’t abide.

As shared on Forbes, “Hairline cracks in concrete are not usually indicative of a major problem, but an inspection by a certified structural engineer is the only way to know for sure whether something is an issue. Costs to repair a foundation can be as low as $1,000, but can also run substantially more, and in some cases, foundations cannot be reasonably repaired.”

Similarly, and of equal importance, water can cause significant damage and be the silent enemy where you don’t even realize. Make sure that you’re keeping an eye out for water spots on exterior walls, which are far more prevalent with older plumbing systems.

Finally, there are the opportunities that are easy to replace. While the popcorn ceiling may have been the desired architectural feature at one point, that’s no longer the case. Here’s where you need to bring in the experts and you should start with the team here. You are our number one priority and that will always remain the case.

Feng Shui and Landscaping

Feng Shui and LandscapingWhile the focus of the team at Restumping Melbourne is on reinforcing the foundation of your home, we would be silly to disregard the role that this plays in your entire property. We want you to feel and safe and comfortable, but most importantly – happy! There’s no sense in coming home after a long day of work (or play) and not looking forward to seeing the place where you hang your hat.

Home can mean different things to a lot of people, but for the purpose of this blog post, we’re talking about the square meters of your property. And while much of that is dedicated to a structure, the other key part is your landscaping. We like to offer you the entire picture on the Restumping Melbourne blog and that means that today, we are focusing on landscaping.

Familiar with Feng Shui? There are many different applications that it can have and a lot of enthusiastic fans around the globe. If you’re not clued in – it’s (according to the dictionary): (in Chinese thought) a system of laws considered to govern spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (qi), and whose favorable or unfavorable effects are taken into account when siting and designing buildings.

The crux is that you’re being thoughtful and strategic about where you place things and how you design spaces. But it isn’t limited to your home and there are more benefits than you realize. And that brings us back to your landscaping.

This news just in… When you keep Feng Shui in mind, it leads to better landscaping. You’re looking at the natural elements of fire, metal, water, wood and earth – all of which are more likely to be found outdoors than in your living room. Think about it; you’ve got fountains and birdbaths, ponds and waterfalls when it comes to water. You’ve got soil, rocks and boulders for wood and earth. You might even have a fire pit outside, which checks that off of the list. If you’re keeping the five elements in mind, you’re more likely to have a robust and well thought-through landscape, a place where you’re excited to spend time.

Here are a couple of quick tips:

  • Make sure that you have all of the elements present for a balanced experience
  • Reach out to the Restumping Melbourne team for advice about retaining walls – they’re a great way to divide up your lawn and keep every element safe and secure
  • Try to not to allow clutter in your garden, or any space for that matter. Everything should have a purpose – even if that means that you just like to look at it. That’s the number one goal of Feng Shui and the best way for you and your sanity to benefit.
  • Bonus points if you focus your landscaping toward the front entrance of your home. It directs energy and attention to the entrance, which some believe to channel positive energy.

Sound hokey? We understand, but the Restumping Melbourne team is all about reinforcing the property of a home where you truly feel at peace.

The Best Ways to Pay it Forward with Your Home

The Best Ways to Pay it Forward with Your HomeIt was the best of times; it was the worst of times. That’s not just the line from a famous tome of literature, but rather a truth hood, especially when it comes to your home. We’re talking about one of the greatest investments that you can make. That doesn’t just mean the money that you’re spending on it, it also means that time that you’re investing and for what reason. Restumping Melbourne is all about reinforcing the foundation of your home. Sometimes, that’s just not enough. Read on for more information:

When you leave your home, you want to be set up for total success during one of the most stressful times of your life, and for many – that means that you’re flipping the home. You’re passing off a place where you’ve made amazing memories to someone that you probably barely know. You want to make the money, and you want to ensure that the money that you spent to begin with, so totally worth it. Note that any investment you make as a homeowner should be thought through properly so that you feel as positive as possible with any project related to your home.

All that aside, sometimes you simply don’t need your home moving forward. Maybe you’ve come in to some money, and maybe you’re simply feeling benevolent. We tip off our hats to this audience for many reasons. You’re contributing in a really meaningful way to our communities around the world. But let’s be strategic about it. Here are global organizations that can help you pass on your home and everything inside to the next, well-deserving owner:

ABC is known by different names all around the world. NPR, BBC, you’ll find objective and wide-reaching information on these stations. One thing that they have in common? None shy away from the issues and all provide the resources that you need, so that you can give back to the community. This article in particular, points out the best places for you to do your part and help make a difference in someone else’s life.

You’ve probably read about the Marie Kondo epic adventure – if not, here are the high notes: get rid of anything that doesn’t spark joy for you. That’s such an open-ended question, but for many donation organizations around the world, what was important, was the influx of items being given after reading the book or hearing her speak. Check out this link for more information.

Finally, we need to touch on the recent Notre Dame fire. It was such a tragedy, removing a landmark from the roadmap of our lives. But you could tell that that was the feeling around the world, and the silver lining here was the outpouring of support, no matter where you lived. Learn more here.

Condos vs. Apartments

Condos vs ApartmentsHere at Restumping Melbourne, we work from the ground up. In fact, we work from beneath the ground, so that we can ensure that the foundation of your house turns it into a home. This is no easy feat – it takes durability, respect, compassionate, creativity and more. Some of these traits apply to the materials and processes that we leverage. Others are simply a part of who we are. It’s a necessity if you’re going to join the team at Restumping Melbourne – we want to know that you’ll always have the backs of our most important assets – our customers.

A huge part of your home is deciding the type that you should have. Condo? Apartment? Semi-de-attached? A standalone home? Each has benefits and opportunities and luckily for you – the Restumping Melbourne team is on the case. Read on for more information:

First up – let’s talk about ownership. After all, that’s the end goal for most. When you’re looking at an apartment, chances are that you’re not the owner. When you’re looking at a condo, it’s most likely that you are, unless you find a really wonderful deal. Condos are managed by what’s called a Home Owner’s Association – or an HOA. You’ve probably heard this quoted on television or on the radio in commercials. Some have really terrible reputations, but more often than not, they’re your biggest supporter. You’re still the owner of a condo, but the HOA manages everything from landscaping to maintenance to special assessments and everything in between. If you’re renting, you need to abide completely by the rules of the landlord. Sometimes this is easy, but other times… not so much.

Next on the list are rules. Ugh – it’s a rough word, isn’t it? Even those of us that grew up loving structure and solidarity may not be pleased with many of the rules that are set in place by either a landlord or an HOA. Rent.com brings up a good point:

“Rules can be trickier with condos. Aside from guidelines set by the HOA for areas outside of the units, restrictions for condos may vary per unit, with owners setting their own regulations. The rules set by the HOA include fees – which help pay for maintenance of common areas and building exteriors. But in some cases, HOAs have restrictions on the number of units that can be rented. This is something to keep in mind when thinking about purchasing a condo with the intention of renting it.”

We’ve got you hooked, haven’t we? We’re not surprised, because every possible piece of information that you find on the Restumping Melbourne site should be one that bears long term value for any of our readers, prospective customers, current customers, or even past customers.

That’s why we want to keep the fun going. In our next post, we’ll talk about the difference in costs, services, the best ways to maintain – and ultimately, which is the best choice for you? As long as you’re clear that the common denominator is a foundation from Restumping Melbourne, we’re all on the right page.

Stay tuned for more information!

Rebar 101

rebarRebar… what is it? What’s it used for? What’s the point and what benefits does it indicate? What does the word even mean? All solid questions and ones that our Restumping Melbourne customers should know the answers to. As a company, we don’t think that there’s much more important than properly educating out customers on the work that’s going to take place. This is your home, one of the most important (and frequently expensive) investments in your life. You should care about the quality of work that takes place and who is crossing your threshold. The Restumping Melbourne team is dedicated to reinforcing your foundation, so really, everything depends on a quality job. And one of the core, mechanical ingredients in the recipe for success is rebar.

It’s everywhere you look. Every building, every bridge, every concrete structure uses it in some way. Rebar is short for reinforced steel bars, and these are the framework that help concrete structures keep their form. They mean that you don’t need to worry about cracking, and you don’t have to worry about the shifting of the structure. Without it, you’re looking at a lot more structural issues. Need a comparison if you’re trying to see a visual? Think of it like the spine of a man or woman. It provides support and keeps structures upright.

It’s an overly complicated structure for a need so simple. It’s basically a network of metal that holds up the structure above. As you may have seen on this blog or when embarking on home improvement projects It’s what really ensures that your home or business is sound and safe, the very best peace of mind.

For us as contractors, the proper way to use rebar is a vital skill. While we are oversimplifying its benefits, it is still a process to learn how to use it. When done manually, it can take days and weeks to bend the rebar, tie it to together and create the best possible foundational structure. You’re looking at long sticks that frequently need to be cut to shorter lengths even before they’re bent during the installation process. The Restumping Melbourne team recommends that you cut first and bend later.

Other helpful tips to have in mind? Make sure that you bend it right. We live in the information age, so there are no excuses for not being able to track down the right resources online. What you will still see are “opportunity” stories, where homeowners or contractors have not done their homework… and it does not benefit them in the long run.

Finally – there is an art to tying it up. You can weld each junction point if you have the money, time and resources, but that’s not often the case. If you’re working on a budget, the Restumping Melbourne team recommends that you use pliers and wire for ultimate success.
